Ulster-Style Sean Nós Step

This workshop will focus on sean nós dancing from Ulster, including reel dancing, clap dancing and Maggie Pickens. Jonathan will demonstrate the rhythmic difference between northern and southern reel dancing, share some of the stories of peoplefrom whom he's collected steps and discuss the many variations and individuality that exist within Maggie Pickens.
Jonathan McCloy hails from Moneymore in County Derry, Northern Ireland. As a child, he was a regular at South Derry céilís and started learning traditional step and sean nós dancing as an adult, along with his wife, under Robert Hunter in Belfast. A successfu lcompetitor in sean nós dance, Jonathan has taught at many festivals including Leitrim Dance Project, IMBOLC International Music Festival and the Brittany Winter School.He has shared a stage with many excellent musicians, including Stephen and Tom Doherty, Johnny and Johnny Óg Connolly, Ciarán Ó Maonaigh and Caitlin Nic Gabhann. Jonathan has also collaborated with Conal Ó Gráda to compose a new tune and step dance, Mo Bhróga Briste Brúit.
